Phase 1 Demolition

Sometimes you just have to wake up one morning and hammer a hole in a wall to get the ball rolling. Now that we are cozily settled in our upstairs nest, the smashing begins! In 2 short days of gross overhead prying and pounding we are able to get all of the plaster and lath from the living room ceiling into a pile of 12 contractor bags and an art installation of Pick-Up Sticks surrounding the wood stove.

We will now have to build a “Within the Walls Memorial Museum” in addition to the LBJ. The walls are coated with 5 layers of wall paper. The ceiling cavity probably hasn’t been accessed since the 1880s and amidst the dust and rodent carcasses we pull out newspaper clippings dating back to 1904, signed postcards and letters, shoe soles, knives, marbles, puzzle pieces…the list goes on and we look forward to conserving and assembling a little exhibit in the near future.

PS. Brandon and I split the dirty work: he ripped out half the ceiling and then I ripped out the other half. He’s just the more photogenic one:)
