As the equinox approaches, the days warm and the snow piles diminish. Our trails have served us well. We are happy as cows in the mud to see the solid ground again! Well, except for the epic drainage problems we have discovered in the driveway and surrounding areas…
During the last few weeks of proper Winter, amidst shivering and shoveling, we slowly managed to finish the hearth detailing, plumb in the new filter and pressure tank, prep a bathroom corner for toilet, build a quick lean-to roof over the compressor between snows, and organize the wood shop in preparation for a spring of building! Surprised that we barely made a dent in the second woodpile…
With the snow almost completely melted now, it is time to assess and plan for a summer of drainage manipulation and landscaping! The driveway gets an initial gravel fill in the worst ruts. Trickle Creek is extra high, so we clear out the debris and divert its flow away from erosion zones with stones. We clear piles and piles of brush from the forest edges and start to outline our future garden beds!
But there’s nothing like building a bridge or going for a paddle on the sunniest days:) This is bridge phase 2.0 – the goal of which is to only use wood scraps and make as few cuts as possible. Janky but functional! (Phase 1.0 was an old ladder.)
