Let us return, for a moment, to a matter I failed to elaborate upon but has been a source of much intrigue: The wording of the Deed!
“A certain tract of land with the buildings thereon…Beginning at a black cherry tree in the wall…running northerly four rods and thirteen links to an iron hub…Thence easterly about twelve rods to the river…”
And so on in this manner, such that we are still unclear what exactly we purchased. It has inspired much forest exploration though! The “cherry tree” is long gone but marked by a metal pipe in a vague rock wall. The “iron hub” was uncovered behind the gardens in a pile of brush and poison ivy. Another metal rod marks our northeast point on the river, and the remnants of an old barbed-wire fence can be found scattered along the opposite side.
And so many colors of lilys!
