The saturated summer heat finally gave way with a week of storms that took out 40 trees at Bald Peak and a few major branches here at the estate!
Thanks to all that soaking power, the gardens are booming as we move into August and past the Sturgeon Super Moon.
The last of the upper cabinetry has been installed and we are able to celebrate with a beautiful purple and green garden harvest curry! An end of season purging at the hardware store endows us with Plenty seeds for next year.
The process of water manipulation and forest reclamation is never ending. We sheet mulch to conquer the ferns, Brandon chucks stones and Socket helps me install fallen branch stair treads down by the river.
Time to relax with an evening of fireworks viewed from high above Merrymeeting Lake! This SELT (Southeast Land Trust) site includes a rest cabin along snowmobile, hiking and cross-country ski trails.
Our most exciting recent historic discovery was the old Cast Iron Kitchen Sink, nearly the size of a bathtub and buried deep in the gardens right where we wanted to plant our Asian Pear tree! It took hours of digging and finally a large ratchet strap and chains attached to the Sink and the back of Peter the truck. Yank, Rev, Plop!
The Asian Pear is now happily planted and mulched as we begin to bid farewell to ephemeral summer and stretch our roots into the cool earth in preparation for fall.
Great photos and commentary but the burning question is what will you do with the sink??? I’m sure you have something creative in mind!
