September brings the first cool days of Autumn, perfect for hikes and paddles. False Sunflower and Goldenrod glisten on the forest edges. The lily pads begin to droop, our first Asian Pears are ready for harvest and a morning mist clings to the river.
The Kitchen is now Morning Glory Blue and ready for harvest season! We won’t have lower cabinets until next year as we move on to more pressing winter preparation projects…but we will have sauerkraut, pickles and curries!
Mud, caulk and trim seal the remaining pesky gaps in our walls, hopefully keeping more heat in this winter. But there are more exciting muddy things happing outside…
With a fortunate free load of sand and stone from the dump, we finally have a beach and finished river stairs! The sand is perfect for catching critter tracks (coyotes and marmots). Little did we know that just 2 days later…
…our baby snapping turtles would hatch! Brandon caught the first one aimlessly wandering up the driveway towards the street. Twenty turtles proceeded to clown-car their way out of a muddy hole. We ferried them all to the river, watching them tumble in the current, fall over rocks and eventually figure it out and remember to breathe.
We look forward to maybe meeting one of our little friends out on the pond someday:)
Amazing photos and commentary again, Maggie! You guys have made such incredible progress and I am so bummed that we didn’t get up this fall to see it all. Next year we will be better planners! It all looks great!
